You all know we are huge fans of sharing our kitchens with our kids, making everything from granola to pizza a group experience with family and friends. But I wanted to tell you about three projects my preschooler and kindergartner have done this year in their schools, which show communal “cooking” can start as early as age 2.

Fried rice has been the topic at our Thursday morning playgroup lately. Why, you may ask? Well, because it’s a perfect “one dish meal” for the family. It can be made quickly, is packed with a ton of veggies, whatever protein you like, and uses day old rice: What could be better?

When you cook with a friend, one of the best benefits is you genuinely learn more about that person. You talk about all kinds of life things, you find out where she keeps her spices, and—this is one of my favorites --what kinds of foods she likes and dislikes.

I cooked with my friend Deb the other day in her newly renovated, gorgeous kitchen. It was quite a treat!

For a home cook and bulk shopper (like me), a warehouse shopping outing to Sam’s Club is almost as good as a trip to an amusement park – and may even be better!

One of the most important things to have when cooking with a friend (other than a good attitude and a clean dishwasher) is a well-stocked pantry. A pantry full of staples--from rice to lemons--will help you save time and money in the kitchen. You’ll be able to be more flexible with your cooking, whipping up delicious meals whenever the moment strikes. I do a “pantry shop” every so often at Sam’s Club in Madison, WI, and I come home prepared for any cooking challenge.
