Since 2006, we’ve been recommending our favorite time-saving kitchen tools to you, first through our Yahoo group and then on our web site. We heard anecdotally from many of you that you bought what we recommended, and loved it too. This week we’re thrilled to launch The Cooking With Friends Shop, where you can search for and buy the tools, gadgets and appliances we love most.

Imagine walking into a real store and being warmly greeted by someone who is really excited about what they are selling. And I mean every item they sell.

Yesterday was my birthday (ahem, a big one). In our family, the tradition is for the birthday person to choose all of his or her favorite foods for dinner (no matter how unusual or difficult to find), and we make the meal together. My husband is sure to choose carrot cake, and often lobster. My kids usually vote for spaghetti and meatballs and chocolate cake. Here’s what we had for my dinner last night: Olives (five kinds stuffed with garlic, marinated in lemon, and other varieties), salmon, beet and sweet potato salad, swiss chard with butternut squash, rosemary potato slices, and raspberry cheesecake. It was delicious! What are your favorites?

A few days ago, a bunch of guys who work together in our city gathered to do a cook-off. It was a Madison version of Iron Chef, where each person competed to cook the most incredible food. It reminded me that although we talk a lot about the women who cook with friends, we also have readers who are men, who like to cook with their wives, partners, children, and their pals.

In the half hour before she was supposed to arrive, I ran around like a crazy person hoping to get things in tip top shape for my cooking date.

Having homemade chicken soup in my freezer makes me inordinately happy. It’s like money in the bank, gas in the car, and being in the middle of a good book.

My friend Jackie called me the other morning to tell me about the dough she had made for some “No Knead” bread. She couldn’t contain her excitement! As her cooking friend,

We’re now entering the October candy vortex, where my kids wake up asking for chocolate and sugar seems to seep through the doorjambs and under the windows.
