My friend came over recently for us to plan and plot our homemade edible gifts. Some of our ideas (not that we’ll do them all!) included Hot Cocoa Mix, Salsa Mix, Rose Sugar, Infused Oils, and Chocolate Lollipops. We talked about how many gifts we’ll need (for friends, teachers, etc.), how we’d like to package them, and hunted around on my laptop for good container deals and ingredients, all while having coffee and catching up. We’ve got another date on the calendar to assemble the presents we’ve decided on. Talk about low-stress shopping.

It was an early dismissal day last Thursday when Kathe called and invited my kids and I over to play. And since it’s never a “should we cook?” but always a “what should we cook?” Kathe mentioned that she needed to make Christmas cookies for her church.

We were so fortunate this week to do an interview with Pam Anderson, the well-known chef, food writer and spokesperson for Carnation. We are pleased to share our question and answer session with you! Pam shares our love for cooking with others, and she especially enjoys cooking with her daughter Sharon, who is in graduate school.

Since the mid-1980s (judging from the newspaper and magazine dates), I’ve been collecting recipes and stories about food. There is the email from my college roommate titled “Artichoke Thing,” the recipe for Jackie Kennedy’s chocolate souffle copied from one of my mother’s cookbooks, and many other little and large scraps of paper promising delicious rice pudding, baked rockfish, gougeres, Amanda Hesser’s lemony risotto and spiced shrimp in beer. Some of the recipes are for dishes I could make in my sleep I’ve done it so many times, others are for dishes I hope, someday to try.

I was thankful for the freezing cold weather this week since my covered front porch served as an extra freezer for my baking date.

As my kids and I make a Pear Crisp for tonight’s dessert and I watch the snow fall outside, I am reminded of three wonderful times when snow played a part in unexpected sharing food with friends.

The holiday season comes and goes every year the same way for me. It barrels in, full force and then, as quickly as it came, leaves. Empty boxes, broken cookies, falling gingerbread houses, fragments of leftover holiday meals, happy memories and exhausted children all left in its wake.

It’s the last day of the year, and not surprisingly, some of my resolutions involve food! That is, teaching and learning about cooking and food. The food journey is never over! Here are a few things I want to do:
